The starting point

A campus with several buildings and a network that had grown layer by layer. We started with a full audit of the physical and logical topology: network equipment, structured cabling and the fibre backbone.

Technology

  • Fibre
  • Optical certification
  • L2/L3 switching
  • 802.1Q VLANs
  • Inter-VLAN routing
  • STP / RSTP
  • LACP
  • DHCP

Star fibre backbone

We redesigned the optical backbone with new fibre links between racks and buildings to move to a physical star topology, removing dependencies and daisy-chained links.

  • Splicing the new links
  • Optical loss measurement
  • End-to-end continuity verified
  • Every link certified

New network equipment

  • Complete equipment replacement
  • L2/L3 switching, trunks and inter-VLAN routing
  • 802.1Q VLANs, STP/RSTP and LACP aggregation
  • Addressing and DHCP

Segmentation and security

  • Separate networks: users, administration, infrastructure, services and other devices
  • Segmentation and security policies between networks
  • Access control and network isolation

Documented racks

We reorganised and documented racks, patch panels, uplinks and fibre links, so the school knows what it has and where everything goes.

Testing and certification

We validated the physical layer, optical links, switching, redundancy, routing, segmentation, performance and security. The result is a centralised, scalable architecture ready for future expansion.

Does your network have daisy-chained links nobody has documented?
